Miamisburg at a glance
Miamisburg is a city of 19,923 people in southern Montgomery County, on the Great Miami River. It began around 1797 as Hole's Station, a stockade built by Zechariah Hole's family, became a village in 1832 and a city in the 1920s.
What that means for your roof
Homes range from 19th-century houses near the old canal-era downtown to newer subdivisions out toward the interstate. Older homes may have box gutters, multiple roof layers and chimneys that need repointing; newer ones tend to have complex roof lines with lots of valleys. See roof leak repair.
A town with storm history
Miamisburg's records describe hot, muggy summers, cold winters and a long history of severe weather. On June 9, 1869, a tornado struck the northwest part of town and reportedly destroyed roofs and chimneys. Storms still roll through every year; see storm and hail damage.
Canal days
The Miami and Erie Canal opened through town in January 1829, carrying goods and people. Today Miamisburg is home to companies such as Motoman and Dayton Superior. Riverside streets can be damp and shaded, which encourages moss and algae on north-facing roof slopes; a roofer can tell you whether staining is cosmetic or a sign of wear.
