Vandalia at a glance
Vandalia is about ten miles north of Dayton, with 15,209 people at the 2020 census. It's the city closest to Dayton International Airport and lies between the Great Miami and Stillwater rivers.
What that means for your roof
Much of Vandalia's housing dates from the 1950s through the 1970s, when the village grew into a charter city. Ranches and two-storeys from that time often have simple gable roofs that are straightforward to replace, but they may also hide original plank decking. See roof replacement.
Open and exposed
Flat ground around the airport and the interstates gives wind a long run at houses. After a strong storm, look for missing tabs along ridges and eaves, which go first; see storm and hail damage.
Crossroads of America
Benjamin Wilhelm settled here in 1838 and opened a store for travellers on the National Road. The village was incorporated on February 7, 1848, named after Vandalia, Illinois, and became a charter city on January 2, 1960. US 40 and the old Dixie Highway have given way to I-70 and I-75, and the town still calls itself the Crossroads of America. Winters here bring the same freeze-thaw cycles as the rest of the valley; read ice dams in Dayton.
